Doug Stone & Terry McBride will Perform at the

 “Under the Texas Sky” Gala March 9th, 2024

 The Cultural Activities Center, Temple, Texas

 

For over fifty years, The Contemporaries of the Cultural Activities Center (CAC) have raised money to support the CAC, focusing on opportunities for children to participate in activities that will stimulate a lifelong interest in the arts. The March 9th, 2024, “Under the Texas Sky” Gala Fund Raiser features entertainers Country Music Legends Doug Stone and Terry McBride. 

 

Native Texan Terry McBride grew up in Lampasas, 54 miles from Temple. Terry’s father, Dale McBride, gave Terry a guitar for his ninth birthday. Dale McBride was a recording artist with several Billboard charted singles in the late 70s. When Terry wasn’t going to school, he spent his summers on the road with his dad and, after high school, traveled with his father’s band for three years before moving to Austin, Texas. Terry enjoyed the local music scene and spent the next few years playing with other Texas Artists. Terry moved to Nashville in 1989. 

 

MCA President Tony Brown later signed Terry to a recording contract. Terry’s group, McBride & The Ride, recorded four albums for MCA. McBride and The Ride had several top-five singles in the 90s. McBride received two million airplay awards for his writing credits for “Just One 

Night” and “Going Out of My Mind.” McBride and The Ride received CMA and AMC nominations for Vocal Group of the Year before disbanding in 1995. 

 

 After McBride & the Ride disbanded, Terry focused his career on songwriting for a long list of County Music artists. Garth Brooks, George Strait, Reba McEntire, Hank Willams Jr., Alan Jackson, and the late Kenny Rogers are well-known county singers who have recorded Terry’s songs. The famous country music Duo Brooks & Dunn cut Twenty-five of Terry’s songs. McBride co-wrote “Play Something Country” with Ronnie Dunn. “Play Something Country” was the fastest-rising single for the award-winning duo Brooks and Dunn.

   

Anyone who is into country music will remember the 1990s singles “I’d Be Better Off (in a Pine Box).” and “In a Different Light” sung by Doug Stone. “In a Different Light” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Country Song.  Between 1990 and 1995, Doug Stone charted eight Number Ones, including: “In a Different Light,” “A Jukebox and a Country Song,” “Too Busy Being in Love,” “Addicted to a Dollar,” and “Why Didn’t I Think of That,” plus fifteen more Top Five singles.

 

In 2000, Doug crashed his ultra-light plane in Robertson County, TN. This experience inspired Stone to write a hit single, “Caught Dead Living.” When you listen to this song, you realize it captures Stone’s love for living life on his terms. Stone is not only still producing pure country gold, but he is also an actor. Stone made his acting debut in the 1995 film “Gordy” and was in the 2011 movie “When the Storm God Rides.”

 

In the last 32 years, Stone has had eight #1 singles, 25 top 10 singles, and over 10 million in album sales. Fans across the nation are still hearing his timeless country hits. In 2012, Doug decided to hit the road again, bringing his music to his fans nationwide. Being on the road again inspired Stone to pull out the demo sessions he had recorded over the last 20 years, and his album “Doug Stone “The Demo’s’, 20 Years of Life” was released.

 Two other unique talents close to home are Ricky and Bubba Smith of A&E’s hit television show “Storage Wars, Texas.” Ricky and Bubba will add their exhilarating style as auctioneers for the evening. Ricky is proud of being a good ol’ country boy who uses his auctioneer skills to outbid others at storage auctions. With forty years of experience, Ricky has built a loyal clientele from auction houses, consignment store owners, and high-class private buyers. Ricky’s nephew Bubba Smith works with Ricky as a spotter. Bubba Smith is from Colorado. As the saying goes, “He got to Texas as fast as he could.” The Smith Team will be after-dinner entertainment as the eventgoers bid on items when Ricky and Bubba use their auctioneer experience to get high dollars for Live Auction items. There will be an online Silent Auction site where people can bid on various things. The Contemporaries can use another colorful Texas saying with the funds raised from this event. “You can take that to the bank!”
